Tinmel Mosque, located in the village of Tinmel in the High Atlas Mountains, approximately 100 km south of Marrakech, Morocco, is one of the most important historical monuments reflecting the beauty of Islamic architecture during the Almohad era. Commissioned by the first Almohad caliph, Abd al-Mu’min ibn Ali al-Kumi, in 1153 AD (548 AH), the mosque was built to commemorate the founder of the Almohad movement, Muhyiddin Ibn Tumart, who was born in this region. The mosque also houses the tomb of Ibn Tumart, making it a significant spiritual and historical site. Tinmel Mosque features a rectangular layout measuring 48.10 meters in length and 43.60 meters in width, surrounded by high walls topped with crenellations. Its prayer hall consists of nine aisles oriented toward the qibla, with a “T”-shaped geometric design characteristic of Almohad architecture. Originally three domes were evenly distributed along the qibla aisle, but only one dome in the southwest corner remains today. The mosque symbolizes the intellectual and political revival of the Almohad state, which extended from Morocco to Andalusia and North Africa. Despite partial destruction caused by the Al Haouz earthquake in September 2023, Tinmel Mosque remains a must-visit heritage site in Morocco, showcasing both historical and architectural significance. It is accessible via National Route 9 from Marrakech, and visiting with a professional tour guide is recommended to fully appreciate its history and design.
